Can we use black soldier fly larvae as an alternative protein source for animal feed?

Researchers on the grant Closing the loop: Black Soldier Fly technology to convert agricultural waste project are investigating the use of Black Soldier Flies technology to turn waste into profit. One such profitable product could be to use the fat, protein-rich larvae as a form of animal feed.


Team member Lachlan Pearson (Scolexia) has been considering the how BSF larvae could work as an alternative protein source for pig feed. He explores the safety and regulatory issues involved.
