Innovative processing of layer manure for reduction of nitrogen losses and GHG emissions and enhanced pasture productivity

Overview

This activity is evaluating novel composting and manure processing technologies to improve nutrient use efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and convert poultry manure into high-value organic fertilisers for pasture and cropping systems in Queensland.

Field demonstrations at Toowoomba compare raw, dried, composted, and pelletised poultry manure with conventional mineral fertilisers across grazing and cropping systems. The research aims to identify practical manure management strategies that improve soil fertility, enhance crop and pasture productivity, and support the transition to more sustainable and circular agricultural systems and contribute to project outcome 1 and 2.

Key Activities

  • Established small- and large-scale field trials in pasture and cropping systems to compare raw, dried, composted, and pelletised poultry manure with conventional fertiliser practices.

  • Evaluated manure products based on nutrient-use efficiency, pasture and crop productivity, soil health, and greenhouse gas mitigation.

  • Monitored soil properties, biomass production, species composition, and crop performance to quantify the agronomic benefits of organic amendments.

  • Developed and tested compost pellet technologies to improve manure handling, storage, transport, and field application.

  • Assessed innovative composting systems, including aerated static pile composting technologies, to improve compost quality while reducing odour and nutrient losses.

  • Established large-scale demonstration trials to evaluate manure products under commercial farming conditions, including grazing management and sorghum production.

  • Collaborated with industry partners to optimise manure drying, composting, and pelleting technologies for practical on-farm adoption.

  • Delivered technical training and participated in national industry events to share research findings and advance best-practice use of organic soil amendments.

  • Contributed research on manure nutrient composition and composting technologies through presentations at the Symposium for the Use of Organic Soil Amendments (SUOSA), strengthening collaboration between researchers, industry, farmers, and policymakers.
