Optimization and utilization of biowaste-derived organomineral fertilizer and compost-related products

Overview

This activity develops and evaluates biowaste-derived organomineral fertilisers and compost-based products to improve nutrient use efficiency, soil health, and crop productivity while supporting a circular economy. By converting organic waste into high-value fertiliser products, the project aims to reduce reliance on conventional fertilisers, recycle nutrients, and enhance the sustainability of Australian farming systems contributing to project outcomes 1 and 2.

Key Activities

  • Develop and optimise organomineral fertilisers by designing, manufacturing, and testing pilot-scale fertiliser products derived from recycled organic waste, including evaluation in pot and field trials.

  • Evaluate agronomic performance through multi-year monitoring of soil health, plant growth, nutrient uptake, and microbial activity to determine optimal application rates and long-term impacts on productivity and soil quality.

  • Translate research into practice by collaborating with industry partners and farmers, publishing scientific findings, developing extension resources, and communicating project outcomes through field demonstrations, fact sheets, and digital media.
